23 February 2019
Invited to the opening address of the President of the French Republic, Mr Emmanuel Macron, the Delegates of the Member States of the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) attended the International Agricultural Show held on 23 February 2019 in Paris. It was an opportunity for the CIHEAM to recall the importance of dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean with regards to agricultural and rural development.
The Delegates of the 13 Member States of the CIHEAM attended the opening speech of President Emmanuel Macron during the International Agriculture Show and were welcomed by Mr Frédéric Lambert, Head of the Europe and International Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The Secretary-General of the CIHEAM, Mr Plácido Plaza, recalled the importance of multilateral dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean in the fields of agriculture and fisheries, which provide shared opportunities and ensure local development.
The theme of this 2019 edition of the Agricultural Show devoted to "Women, Men, Talents” and President Macron's strong message to young farmers converge with two strategic priorities of the CIHEAM: the fight against the waste of knowledge, traditional know-how and human potential of the Mediterranean region, and investment in new generations and rural areas, through training, capacity building and technical assistance activities.
The 12th ministerial meeting of CIHEAM to be held in Tunis (November 2019) will focus on "Youth empowerment as a lever for agricultural and rural development in the Mediterranean".
The Delegation then visited several stands devoted to livestock breeding, plant chains and finally met their partners from INRA and CIRAD. In addition, the Delegates seized the opportunity of this day to visit Mediterranean stands and appreciate flagship products of the region of which the CIHEAM defends the traditional know-how.
