International recognition of the CIHEAM's activities

The FAO Director-General congratulates the great job of the CIHEAM and quotes the Secretary General, Cosimo Lacirignola

“There can be no peace without food security, no food security without agricultural production, and no agriculture without development dynamics in rural areas. Food Security and agriculture are closely linked to peace and stability in these areas, and should be considered priority issues to prevent forced displacements and migration”

Cosimo Lacirignola, SG of the CIHEAM

13 October 2017, Rome

The Director-General of the United Nation- Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), José Graziano da Silva, mentioned the CIHEAM today during the Italian National Research Council on “Climate, agriculture, migration”.

He congratulated the CIHEAM for the great job that has been done and for our contribution to strengthen the resilience of coastal and rural communities in the Mediterranean.

This important recognition of our activities by the FAO is the result of the dynamic initiated within the framework of the PACMED2025 (CIHEAM ACTION PLAN FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN) and following the CIHEAM 11th Ministerial Meeting in Tirana (22 September 2016) which focused on the root causes of distress migration from the point of view of agricultural development and food security.

Extract of the statement of the DG of the FAO

On this respect, let me congratulate the great job that has been done by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM). FAO and CIHEAM have been working together to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities in the Mediterranean, under the view that agriculture can be an important tool for preventing the risks and managing the tensions related to migration. I would like to quote the conclusion of an excellent article written by Mr. Cosimo Lacirignola, CIHEAM Secretary-General.

Open quote: “There can be no peace without food security, no food security without agricultural production, and no agriculture without development dynamics in rural areas. Food Security and agriculture are closely linked to peace and stability in these areas, and should be considered priority issues to prevent forced displacements and migration”. End quote.”

The CIHEAM will attend the celebration of World Food Day 2017, next Monday in FAO Headquarters, dedicated to the relationship between migration and food security. The Pope and Ministers of the G7 countries will be present.
