The Secretary-General of the CIHEAM, Plácido Plaza, went to Italy between the 13 and the 15 of March. The first step of this visit took place at the CIHEAM Bari where he held discussions with the teams working on the ground. The second step took place in Rome where meetings were organised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The Secretary-General of the CIHEAM, Plácido Plaza went to the Institute of the CIHEAM in Bari to hold discussions with the staff and congratulate them for the significant work conducted in the fields of training, research, and cooperation as well as development projects implemented in the region. He presented the priorities of his mandate including:
The actions require the establishment of new partnerships and the strengthening of existing institutional synergies.
The speech of Plácido Plaza, in the presence of Maurizio Raeli, Director of the CIHEAM-Bari Institute and of Teodoro Miano, new Delegate of Italy and Vice-President of the CIHEAM was also the occasion to pay a high tribute to the late Cosimo Lacirignola, Secretary General of the CIHEAM who passed away on the 2 of January 2018 and who initiated the new Strategic Agenda of the CIHEAM (CAPMED 2025).
Mr. Plácido Plaza, Mr. Maurizio Raeli and Mr. Teodoro Miano were welcomed by Mr. Luigi De Chiara, Plenipotentiary Minister of the General Directorate of Development Cooperation at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The Minister wished to congratulate Plácido Plaza for his recent election and ensure him of the continuity of the support of the Ministry, particularly by extending the extraordinary contribution of Italy to support the coming CAPMED projects.
The Delegation of the CIHEAM was then invited to a meeting at the headquarters of the FAO to discuss several current joint projects and future strategic areas of collaboration. The Secretary-General first held discussions with Ms. Marcela Villareal, Director of Partnerships and South-South Cooperation at the FAO and then with Roberto Ridolfi, Assistant Director-General, Department of Support and Technical Cooperation. This meeting was especially aimed at discussing the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding FAO-CIHEAM on the basis of joint priorities and at preparing the meeting to be held on the 22 of March in Paris between the Director General of the FAO, José Graziano Da Silva and Plácido Plaza.
