CIHEAM maintains close relations with the Council of Europe, which was responsible, along with the OECD, for founding the Centre.

The relationship between the two bodies was manifested in the organisation of the 2nd Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Agriculture, held in Strasbourg on 28 and 29 September 2006. This meeting set out to take stock of progress in cooperation on agricultural and rural affairs in the Mediterranean area and identify existing and emerging challenges facing regional producers.

It was also to be seen in the preparation and drafting by CIHEAM of a 2007 report entitled “Euro-Mediterranean agricultural and rural policy”. On 25 June 2007, at one of its ordinary meetings, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously adopted the report. The rapporteur Mr Walter Schmied, Chairman of the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs, presented the report’s rationale and recommendations in the presence of Mr Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the FAO.
