Today in Chania, 140 former students of the CIHEAM Institute of Chania from 33 countries gathered for a second ALUMNI meeting.
The alumni exchanged on their career paths and their personal evolution, marked by their experience in the multicultural context of the CIHEAM. This meeting was also an opportunity to discuss their mobilization on the priority actions of CIHEAM such as food security, climate change, the empowerment of women and youth, the development of coastal areas and migration.
The Secretary-General of the CIHEAM, Plácido Plaza, insisted on the strategic role of the ALUMNI in building a community of interests involved in the major challenges of sustainable development and in the importance of their feedback and contribution to the Organization educational and research activities.
He also recalled that the CIHEAM was an instrument at their service to keep them informed and connected on Mediterranean agri-food issues and to assist them in the development of their careers through professional training.
Welcome addresses made by Dr George Baourakis, Director of CIHEAM Chania, Prof. Vasilios Digalakis, Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, the Delegate of Greece and Vice-President of the CIHEAM, Prof. Charalambos Kasimis also highlighted these points.
The Mayor of Chania and the Vice Governor of Crete attended the event which was punctuated by interventions of study coordinators of the CIHEAM Chania's Master of Science programs and by brief speeches notably on the contribution of ALUMNI to academic excellence, research or to international decision-making.
The meeting ended with a Cretan dinner accompanied by an orchestra and local dancers.
Since the creation of the CIHEAM in 1962, more than 40,000 people have attended long-term and short courses at the CIHEAM's four institutes (Bari, Chania, Montpellier and Zaragoza). This dense network, fostered by strong links between its members and the cultural and professional diversity that characterizes it, is a precious resource for training courses, the professional integration of graduates and the reputation of CIHEAM.
