Organized by the CIHEAM Institute of Bari, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the third edition of the “Concert for the Earth” took place on Saturday 24 November at the Petruzzelli Theatre (Italy). This event aimed at promoting the theme of the World Food Day 2018 "OUR ACTIONS ARE OUR FUTURE” and contributing to raise awareness on poverty, hunger and malnutrition issues notably among the young generation. This year's event was also dedicated to Cosimo Lacirignola, Secretary General of CIHEAM, who passed away prematurely on 2 January 2018. A Gold Medal was offered to his family by Masum Burak and Placido Plaza, respectively President and Secretary General Ad Interim of the CIHEAM.
The event brought together the Mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, the Governor, Michele Emiliano, the Rector of the University of Bari, Antonio Felice Uricchio, the Rector of the Polytechnic of Bari, Eugenio Di Sciascio, the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Leonardo Bencini, the First Vice President of the Commission for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament, Paolo De Castro, the Consul General of Italy in Lugano, Mauro Massoni, the FAO South-South Partnership and Cooperation Division Director, Marcela Villareal, the UNHRD-Brindisi Deputy Network Coordinator, Marta Laurenzio, the Director of the Coordination of International Policies of the Puglia Region, Bernardo Notarangelo.
Maurizio Raeli, Director of the CIHEAM Institute of Bari and international experts presented their activities aimed to combat hunger and to encourage young people to support the global goal #ZeroHunger.
Active in the Mediterranean region for over fifty years, Maurizio Raeli recalled the role played by the CIHEAM to improve food and nutritional security, to strengthen the capacities of small farmers and coastal communities and to invest in supporting young generations through training and research activities. Over 56 years of activity, through the extraordinary experience of intercultural dialogue and cooperation, the CIHEAM has trained over 40,000 people.
In the second half of the evening, the presentations of the international experts were followed by performances and festivities. The Master Paolo Lepore's Choir with the Jazz Studio Orchestra performed the Concert for the Earth with musical pieces by Michael Jackson, Lucio Battisti, John Lennon, Aretha Franklin, Pink Floyd, etc.
