Meeting between the CIHEAM and the Greek Minister of Agriculture in Athens
On 30 January 2025, in Athens, his Excellency Mr Kostantinos Tsiaras, Minister of Agriculture of Greece, hosted a CIHEAM delegation led by Teodoro Miano, Secretary General, in the presence of Pr Christos Avgoulas, Delegate of Greece to the CIHEAM, and Dr George Baourakis, Director of the CIHEAM Chania. This meeting reaffirmed the strong ties between Greece and the CIHEAM and highlighted the long-standing support that Greece has provided to the organisation, especially through its Institute in Crete.


Teodoro Miano acknowledged the long-standing commitment of Greece and stressed that the recognition of the academic status of the the CIHEAM in Greece is a fundamental asset, not only for CIHEAM member countries but also for neighbouring regions such as the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa.
At the core of this cooperation, the CIHEAM Chania plays a key role in postgraduate education and scientific research, offering high-quality training courses to students and researchers from across the Mediterranean. The institute is recognised as a hub for knowledge production and dissemination, with its research regularly published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals.
Discussions also focused on strengthening the contribution of Greece to the CIHEAM, the growing role of the country within the organisation, and opportunities for international cooperation in the fields of innovation and youth entrepreneurship. The sustainable management of coastal areas and the development of aquaculture were also among the key topics discussed, given their significance for the future of food security and environmental sustainability in the Mediterranean.
This meeting reinforced a historic collaboration and opened new perspectives for an enhanced partnership dedicated to sustainable development and food sovereignty in the Mediterranean region.
