A meeting was held at the Mediterranean Agricultural Institute of Chania (CIHEAM CHANIA) on Wednesday, 27 May 2020, as part of the research program "Organic and Conventional Olive Cultivation of the Koroneiki variety in the Region of Crete: Evaluation study based on production costs", funded by the Region of Crete (2020-2021) and carried out by CIHEAM-CHANIA.
The purpose of the meeting was to investigate the possibility of installing a meteorological station in the area of Kastelli, Chania, in the context of the implementation of the above research project. The results of the project can contribute to the shift of olive growers towards organic farming, as well as for the promotion of environmentally friendly practices, the production of superior quality products, and strengthening of the income of olive growers.
The meeting was attended by the Scientific Associate of CIHEAM-CHANIA, meteorologist Manolis Lekkas, the Director of CIHEAM-CHANIA Dr. George Baourakis, researchers of the Institute, as well as the olive grower from Kastelli Dimitris Schinoplokakis, award-winning Farmer of the Year 2017 at national level and 6th at European level, for the innovative techniques and environmental practices followed.
Following the meeting, Mr. Manolis Lekkas made an on-site visit to the experimental fields that will be used for the needs of the research project. The possibility of installing a meteorological station that will carry a complete set of instruments is being studied, which will be able to objectively record data that will serve the purposes of the research program.
